Divers and diving robots investigate the underwater springs that supply the lake with water.

For approximately 1,200 years, over 150 fir trees have been standing upright in the lake bed in “Lake Altaussee Underwater Forest.” The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans has been working with researchers to learn what happened.

The Paleo-Lake Altaussee was formed during the penultima Ice Age approximately 200,000 to 130,000 years ago.

Lake Altaussee as a time machine. The deeper you go, the further back in time you travel.
